The bold plan to restructure nine general agencies of the UMC, bringing them under a single, small board and an executive officer, is not faring well so far at General Conference.
The General Administration Committee, which is screening restructuring legislation before it goes to all delegates, has voted to work with a less sweeping restructuring proposal, dubbed “Plan B” by its authors.
So the plan but forward by the Connectional Table, and crafted by the CT’s Interim Operations Team, is shelved for now.
“Disappointed but open,” said the Rev. Adam Hamilton, who was part of the CT/IOT effort.
Under that plan, the Connectional Table would go away, to be replaced by a 15-member board. But critics said such a board couldn’t reflect the diversity of the church, and also questioned ending the autonomy of the General Council on Finance and Administration.
Plan B would retain the Connectional Table. Most agencies, including GCFA, would go forward independently, albeit it with smaller boards.
