Faith in Action: Wesleyan message losing out, but it need not be so

Andrew Thompson

Recently there has been a lot of talk in social media about the “visibility” of the Wesleyan message in the larger culture.

Methodists can generally expect to be heard by other Methodists. But are they being heard “out there” in the wider world? Is their message reaching the unchurched, especially?

The job of arranging a memorial service for the first man to walk on the moon fell, in large part, to the first United Methodist to serve as worship director for the Washington National Cathedral, in Washington, D.C. The Rev. Gina Campbell worked behind the scenes to make sure that the Sept. 13, 2012 farewell for Neil Armstrong pleased his family, NASA officials and a packed house of high-profile guests. “With so many people involved,” said Ms. Campbell, “you use your best diplomatic skills.” The National Cathedral, with its soaring [...]

Learning from Adam Hamilton’s homily at National Cathedral

Ben-Gosden

By Ben Gosden, Special Contributor… Like many proud United Methodists I watched the Rev. Adam Hamilton give the homily at the National Prayer Service this past Tuesday. The service was in the historic National Cathedral and celebrated our religious diversity in America. To have a United Methodist pastor give the sermon for such an event is a pretty big deal, so I made sure to tune into the live online feed. I think most would agree that Adam did a fantastic job. The sermon was well-crafted with great flow and [...]

SMU Professor: Adam Hamilton brought Wesleyan message to national stage

Maria Dixon Hall

By Maria Dixon Hall, Special Contributor… Editor’s note: The Rev. Adam Hamilton, senior pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, delivered the sermon at the Jan. 22 National Prayer Service at Washington National Cathedral, a post-inaugural event attended by President Obama and Vice President Biden and their spouses.  Maria Dixon Hall, associate professor of organizational communication in the division of communication studies at Southern Methodist University, offers this analysis of Mr. Hamilton’s address.  Let me be clear: this was not Adam Hamilton’s best sermon. The opening was disjointed and a cornucopia of [...]

Commentary: God has never been a stranger in our public schools

Adam Hamilton_sq

By Adam Hamilton, Special Contributor… One reaction to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School has been a call to “put God back in the schools.” I even heard one person suggest that the violence that happened in the school was because “we took God out of public schools.” As a pastor, I have a deep desire to lead people to God and encourage people to pray, read the Bible, and carry their faith into every part of their lives. But I’ve got a few questions about “putting God back [...]

GC vies with Judicial Council as 2012’s biggest news-maker

Members of the Virginia Conference delegation huddled to discuss possible next steps after Judicial Council ruled agency restructuring legislation to be unconstitutional. The decision came on the afternoon of May 4, the last day of General Conference 2012 in Tampa, Fla., and led many to conclude the $9 million gathering had largely been a bust. UNITED METHODIST NEWS SERVICE PHOTO BY MIKE DUBOSE

Summarizing a full year in the life of the sprawling, conflicted United Methodist Church is always a challenge. Every fourth year, it gets tougher. That’s because General Conference—the quadrennial gathering for setting church policy, law and finances—occurs and influences so much of church life. But the 2012 General Conference faced surprising competition as a news-maker. It came from the UMC’s Judicial Council, which overruled as unconstitutional two major pieces of legislation approved by General Conference delegates. If you were to put a pop song lyric to how things unfolded, it [...]
